It is common for homeowners to tackle home improvement projects. They can attest that there is a fine line between success and failure, especially when the homeowner has little experience. For successful home improvement project planning, read on!

If you refinish your existing cabinets, rather than buying new ones, you can save a lot on your kitchen remodel. Paint the bases, replace fixtures and get new doors for a brand new kitchen. That will allow you to modernize the kitchen without paying too much.

TIP! It is possible to expand storage capacity by using old shoe boxes. You can use fabric or wallpaper to decorate the outsides of the boxes to make them more pleasing to the eye.

A simple home improvement that anyone can do is painting. Adding some new paint to a home can give it a new appearance, which doesn’t really cost you a whole lot of money or time. Fresh paint makes your home more attractive to buyers.

Pouring bleach on the inside of the toilet bowl can help keep it sparkling clean. The bleach may have an unpleasant smell, but it will reduce the spread of germs and your risk of getting sick, in addition to giving you a clean and shiny toilet. If you can’t stand the smell, buy scented bleach.

To seal bugs out while reducing your home heating and cooling expenses, use caulk to completely seal cracks, holes or any other openings that you notice. Apply caulking around windows, baseboards and other places that need it. Once the caulking is dry, bugs will be hard-pressed to find a way inside, and air will not be allowed out.

TIP! Protect the floor in any room you are going to paint. This helps keep wet paint off of your flooring.

Put exhaust fans in the kitchen above the stove, and in each bathroom. Venting this humid, warm air prevents mold and mildew from forming. Not only does this lower the chances for mildew, but the prevented condensation no longer poses a threat of rot along the foundation.

To make your home improvement project a success, always hire a licensed contractor. Contractors and subcontractors are required by each state to have certification. Although the requirements are not a guarantee that your contractor is competent for the job, they are required by law. More than likely, if a contractor doesn’t have the right license, they also do not have the right insurance, meaning it’s risky to hire them.

Any renovation of the kitchen or bathroom plumbing or fixtures should start with shutting off the supply of water. It seems obvious, but many homeowners make the mistake of forgetting this step and ending up with a major flood which requires further renovations.

TIP! You can use empty 2-liter soda bottles for storage containers. They are transparent and are great for storing sugar, flour and similar staples.
